SURVIVAL CODE-an entertaining mix of “Outland” meets “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome”

Published on May 13, 2014 by in New Releases

Major Video, Springdale Fayetteville, northwest Arkansas, video dvd rentals, coupons, survival codeDirected by: David Frazee
Starring: Ty Olsson, Patrick Gallagher, Michelle Harrison, Christine Horne

A former ultimate fighter in the year 2045 becomes the protector of a town that houses the world’s last remaining oil, gas, and mineral deposits, eventually challenging a group of local Russians to a cage match to determine who will take control the precious dwindling resources.

….and now, a review by an everyday person ( Beyond Media Online):

“I watched this with low expectations but was pleasantly surprised when it re orientated my point of view. I know it’s hard to accept that some good things come from Canada but there you go. Yes some of the characters are a bit cliché however that does not distract from the family that makes up the heart of this story and makes me wish that there was more to follow in a series.

This story is about hard choices in a hard world where people are the cheapest commodity. Ty Olsson who has credits from his performance of Benny in Supernatural does not disappoint and the supporting cast do what they are supposed to do very well. If you watch it you will be touched by the humanity of it’s direction and want to find out where do these lost individuals go from here. This is not a moral tale rather a tale of people muddling by in a gray and darker gray world but hoping to see the sun in a cold cold land.

To me, fiction is most successful when the characters come alive in your mind and you want to continue their stories. In that, “Survival Code” completely succeeds. And I sincerely hope that a network such as Space or Syfy feels the same way, and will use this movie as the pilot of a series, as it seems intended to be.”
Overall Rating: 8/10

Kristen Bell as perky super sleuth VERONICA MARS recaptures the magic to perfection!

Published on May 13, 2014 by in New Releases

Major Video, Springdale Fayetteville, northwest Arkansas, video dvd rentals, coupons, veronica marsDirected by: Rob Thomas

Starring: Kristen Bell, Ryan Hansen, Jason Dohring

The popular television mystery series makes the leap to the big screen in this feature financed by an ambitious Kickstarter campaign. Directed by Rob Thomas (who shares a co-screenwriting credit with Diane Ruggeiro), the film follows Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell) as she returns to her hometown of Neptune, CA, to investigate a case during her ten-year high-school reunion.

3 stars out of 4 — “It’s effective as a sequel to the television series and works just as well as a stand-alone film.” (USA Today)

“MARS fans will have a blast. And those jazzy blues notes that deepened the series resonate onscreen.” (Rolling Stone)

“[I]t’s smooth and engaging…clearly informed by Thomas’ genre-savvy storytelling and unpretentious craftsmanship, and not without a certain self-deprecating sense of humor…” (Variety)

4 stars out of 5 — “Never mind the Kickstarter success story — a character-driven crime mystery that relies on investigation rather than action is a rare, delightful thing in itself.” (Total Film)

“Kristen Bell is in fine form as the sharp-witted and stiletto-tongued Veronica, whose high polish on the art of sarcasm has endeared her to fans as a supremely self-possessed outsider.” (Hollywood Reporter)

“VERONICA MARS updates but preserves the smartly insular, Nancy Drew–meets–Buffy–meets–Emma Peel spirit of the teen-private-eye series.” (Entertainment Weekly)

“As a nostalgia trip, and a valentine to the virtues of its terrific source material, VERONICA MARS gets the job done.” — Grade: B (A.V. Club)

Published on May 13, 2014 by in New Releases

art of the steal, major video, arkansas,Directed by: Jonathan Sobol Starring: Kurt Russell, Matt Dillon, Terence Stamp, Jay Baruchel

An art thief-turned-motorcycle daredevil pulls his old crew back together for one last heist in this caper film from writer/director Jonathan Sobol (A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO ENDINGS).

Crunch Calhoun (Kurt Russell) has a reputation for big stunts, and hard landings. Now that years of motorbike mishaps have taken their toll on the aging Crunch, he is tempted back into a life of crime in order to make a buck. Unfortunately, Crunch isn’t the best when it comes to choosing his criminal cohorts, and he winds up in prison after being double-crossed by his scheming half-brother Nicky (Matt Dillon). His retirement fund depleted by the time he’s released, Crunch sets his sights on one last score that will set him up for life.

The mission: Assemble a team, steal the Guttenberg Bible, replace it with a counterfeit, and collect a cool $20 million. With his apprentice Francie (Jay Baruchel), the well-connected Paddy Kenneth Walsh, expert forger Guy (Chris Diamantopoulos), and idea man Nicky by his side, Crunch begins preparations for the job he’ll be remembered for. The heist hits the skids, however, when untrustworthy Nicky resorts to his old tricks. But this time Crunch is ready, and as their partnership dissolves he prepares to pull out his ace in the hole. Terence Stamp and Katheryn Winnick co-star.
Reviews
“THE ART OF THE STEAL is a fairly amusing heist film with some sibling tension helping the story along.” (New York Times)

“[A] compelling take on why people are drawn to familiar, generic pleasures…” (A.V. Club)

“THE ART OF THE STEAL looks and feels like a crime thriller, but it’s a comedy, and each actor has clicked into his respective role with a gusto and enjoyment that really makes the film.” (RogerEbert.com)

Three decades later, enterprising boxing promoter Dante Slate Jr. (Kevin Hart) lures the aging pugilists back into the ring for the fight that everyone has been waiting for. Meanwhile, when Razor and The Kid see each other for the first time in 30 years, the cameras are rolling as tempers suddenly flare. “Jackson remains a skilled purveyor of derring-do.” (A.V. Club)
