Every summer produces classic horror films and not all of them involve campers getting wacked by an axe murderer. They all play on our fears about things that we enjoy in the summer like going to the beach or taking a vacation.
Here are some of our favorites for summer. Rent them if you dare. If you don’t like our list we have a large selection of thrillers and chillers for you to choose from at Northwest Arkansas’s best video stores, Major Video.
Steven Spielberg’s first great classic, with outstanding performances by Richard Dreyfuss, Roy Scheider and Robert Shaw, Jaws is often cited as one of the greatest films of all time. Jaws was the highest grossing picture ever at the time and ‘don’t go in the water” became a common phrase that summer. Kids were not only scared to swim in Table Rock Lake that summer, they were terrified to take a bath. 36 years later the shark terrorizing the people and tourists of Amity Island still plays well. If it has been awhile since you watched it commercial free, now is a good time. If you have never seen it….well what are you chicken?
Wrong Turn 2003
This movie will definitely make me think before I set out on my own on some back roads for a trip, even in a working automobile. Wrong Turn is about some people ending up stranded after going on some back roads in West Virginia. They run into some cannibals, who apparently prey on any humans that end up wrecking or running out of gas near their home. This is one scary summer movie!
Ray Liotta, John Cusack and Amanda Pete star in this summer horror film where some travelers all end up in a hotel in the desert due to a storm. Strange murders start happening of the travelers, one by one, as they begin to realize there was something that brought those specific travelers to this hotel to be killed.
Hostel: Part II (2007)
In this sequel to the original movie Hostel, three girls are studying in Italy for the summer. They end up in Slovakia, just like the guys in the original movie. All the blood and gore from the first movie is still there, and perhaps more. If you’re the type who likes the bloody horror movies, this flick is for you.
