With the support of an unconventional priest (William H. Macy) and a devoted team of caretakers, the virginal writer hires a compassionate sex surrogate (Helen Hunt), who finds her life profoundly transformed by their tender sessions.
4 stars out of 5 — “[I]f the humor draws them in, it’s the emotional honesty that will get people talking about THE SESSIONS….Central to Lewin’s achievement is a towering performance from John Hawkes…” (Box Office)

“[S]urprisingly accessible and emotionally effective….[A] well-acted and constructed film…” (Hollywood Reporter)

“[Hawkes delivers] an extraordinary performance, from the pinched voice conveying anxiety with humor to the twisted posture that can express, almost simultaneously, the agony of severe disability and the ecstasy of human contact.” (Wall Street Journal)

“O’Brien chronicled his surrogacy experience with such humor and intellect that empathy, not pity prevailed….That sensibility buoys writer-director Ben Lewin’s screenplay as well.” (Los Angeles Times)

“Thankfully, plenty of laughs do ensue in THE SESSIONS, in which John Hawkes doesn’t play as much as channel the late poet and author Mark O’Brien.” (Washington Post)

3.5 stars out of 4 — “[Lewin] has crafted an exhilarating gift of a movie that’s funny, touching and vital. And Hawkes does the kind of acting that awards were invented for.” (Rolling Stone)

3.5 stars out of 4 — “Helen Hunt provides a performance of tact and delicacy.” (Chicago Sun-Times)

“THE SESSIONS is a pleasant shock: a touching, profoundly sex-positive film that equates sex with intimacy, tenderness and emotional connection instead of performance, competition and conquest.” (New York Times)

“[A]dmirably frank and funny about sex…sweet instead of raunchy, and plaintive instead of snickering and vulgar.” — Grade: B (A.V. Club)

4 stars out of 5 — “[T]errific though Hawkes is, he’s flanked by two equally impressive performers.” (Total Film)

“[Hunt] is so good here it’s almost a rediscovery….[An] undeniably endearing piece…” (Sight and Sound)
